Samsung Galaxy S3 Audio/Speaker/Microphone Issues [Troubleshooting guide]

Samsung Galaxy S3 Audio/Speaker/Microphone Issues [Troubleshooting guide] - First announced in March 2017, the Xperia L1 has come to replace Sony’s now discontinued E series. Priced at a surprisingly cheap £169, the L1 is Sony’s newest attempt at shaking up the budget phone market. Its large screen and sleek design make us think of Sony’s higher range of smartphones: it would be hard to single it out as the cheapest model in a line of Xperias. But at such a bargain price, we can’t expect it to perform as well as its more expensive counterparts. So how does the L1 hold up to other low-budget smartphones? To our readers who have relayed similar problem to us via email, including those who have troubles hearing a caller (vice versa), you too can refer to this guide and try the workarounds and resolution procedures we provide in this page.

You can skip to the method that you haven't yet tried on if you want.

Please don't forget to test your device after performing each resolution procedure to see if the problem is already fixed, otherwise continue to the next method.

1. Check your coverage area and ensure you are within your network's coverage.

You can navigate to your carrier's website to access the coverage locator page or contact support for further assistance.

2. Check the speakerphone and ensure it's properly working.

Please note thought that the speakerphone is only available while you are on a call. This means when the call is ended, the speakerphone is also disabled. To enable/disable the speakerphone, select Speaker located in the lower left of the screen while on a call. You will know if it's enabled when it appears green.

3. Verify audio settings are correct.

If you're not getting notifications, ringing, or vibrating when receiving calls, texts or emails, then try to adjust the volume controls. You can adjust the volume by pressing the Home button up or down. This button is located on the left corner. Follow these steps if you're unsure how it's done:

a. Tap Apps from the Home screen.
b. Tap Settings from the Apps tab.
c. Tap Sound from the Device section.
d. Tap Volume.
e. Adjust the volume for any of the given options including music, video, games & other media, ringtone, notifications and system.
f. Tap OK when done.

If you cannot adjust the volume, make sure the Turn Off All Sounds settings is disabled or turned off.

4. Verify Bluetooth settings and ensure it's OFF or disabled.

Follow these steps to disable Bluetooth function on the GS3 smartphone:

a. Tap Apps from the Home screen.
b. Tap Settings from the Apps tab.
c. Go to Wireless & Networks section, then tap the Bluetooth switch to turn it OFF or disabled.

5. Check for any available software update for your device.

You may need to update your device software version to get this issue fixed. Generally, updates are rolled out to fix any issue existing on a device. In fact, Samsung has already rolled out a firmware update to fix the speakerphone bug.

Follow these steps to check for a software update on your GS 3 device:

a. Tap Apps from the Home screen.
b. Tap Settings from the Apps tab.
c. Tap Software update from the System section.
d. Select Check for new software update.

6. Use Safe Mode to check your device.

Putting your device in safe mode or in diagnostic state can help you determine if a third-party app is causing an issue. Here's how to activate Safe mode in the Galaxy S3:

a. Press and hold the Power button (with the device still on) until the Phone options appear.
b. Select and hold Power off until you will be prompted with the Restart in Safe mode option, then release.
c. Tap Turn on Safe Mode.
d. Wait for the phone to restart and boot up in Safe mode. It could take up to 45 seconds to finish. Upon restart, you should see Safe Mode in the lower left of the unlock/home screen.

While in safe mode, you can test your device and app functionality. Try to make a call and see if the problem is gone. If so, then the problem has been isolated to third-party apps that need to be uninstalled or removed. Otherwise, it's a device issue.

After using Safe mode, reboot or restart your phone to exit or disable safe mode and get back to Normal mode.

7. Perform a soft reset.

A soft reset has been commonly used to resolve several device issues including apps-related and performance issues. To perform a soft reset on your Galaxy S3, press and hold the Power button, select Restart, then tap OK. Alternately, you can perform a soft reset by simply removing the battery and re-insert it after a few seconds, and power on the device.

User-defined solutions

Some GS 3 users fixed this problem by verifying some phone settings. Here's how they did it.

Method 1:

a. Go to Settings.
b. Select Accessibility.
c. Remove the check from the box next to Turn off all sounds.
d. Go back to Settings.
e. Select Sound and make sure your volume levels are correct and sound is enabled or turned on.

Method 2:

a. Tap Phone.
b. Select Menu.
c. Tap Call Settings.
d. Select Additional Settings.
e. Remove the check on Noise reduction option to disable the feature. Doing so will help lessen echo and get clearer calls.

If problem persists after performing all the aforesaid resolution procedures and workarounds, please contact your device carrier to escalate the problem or take your phone to a nearby service center for checkup. It is possible that the microphone is faulty and needs to be repaired or replaced.

Or, you can try to take a look at the microphone hole on the bottom edge of the phone. If you see something is stuck in there, then that could be the problem. You can clean it carefully or try to compressed air to blow it out.

Hope this helps.
